This engine of war was invented by the Greeks in 800 BCE and adapted by the early Romans. There were different types of Ballista, some that threw large arrows called bolts and some that hurled rocks. This Ballista model kit is really fun to build and even more fun to play with when it's complete. When not in use, it looks impressive as a display quality model on your bookshelf or desk.
The ballista uses a pair of skeins (which are bundles of twisted rope) to throw it's projectile. It's amazing the amount of power they used to get out of these amazing machines. They are similar to the working of a crossbow but the Ballista actually preceded the crossbow in western culture by over a thousand years and is where we get the word "Ballistic".
This ballista model shoots 5" long darts (which are included) thirty to forty feet depending on how good of a job you do putting it together.
